CAPPI: Improving addiction and pain outcomes through research, education, patient care, and community outreach

The mission of CAPPI is to conduct cutting-edge research that can be developed into better treatments for addiction and pain. The faculty and staff in CAPPI seek to educate other professionals and the public about addiction and pain in a way that promotes compassion and minimizes the stigma of these two health conditions. CAPPI also serves as the focal point for community outreach in order to build effective partnerships with the communities we serve.

Dept. of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine: Committed to transforming the field of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine by generating and translating knowledge into superior clinical practice

We are uniquely situated at the intersection of a robust and diverse clinical practice, groundbreaking research, and innovative educational programs. We nurture highly innovative research programs, spanning from the bench to the bedside and to the population. Our research efforts fall into two categories: basic and translational research and clinical research. We employ an anesthesia care team model that is buttressed by dedicated nurse anesthetists, technical assistants, and laboratory technicians to oversee more than 130,000 patient encounters annually.

Kansas University - Department of Anesthesiology by Doug Wright's logo

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) houses clinical and basic researchers devoted to the study of acute and chronic pain. Strengths in clinical research are bolstered by a large number of pain patients passing through the University of Kansas Hospital Marc A. Asher, MD, Comprehensive Spine Center. KUMC excels in clinical research devoted to interventional spinal stimulation, fibromyalgia, pain genetics and painful diabetic neuropathy. The research community also includes strengths in basic research associated with genetic studies of chronic pain, visceral pain, spinal cord injury-induced pain, chemotherapy-induced painful neuropathy, and diabetic painful neuropathy. The department also collaborates extensively with a diverse and active pain community at KUMC and within the Kansas City region. Related, the KUMC has excellent basic and clinical strengths in metabolism, energy homeostasis, obesity, and physical activity/exercise related to acute and chronic pain.

The Anesthesiology Department is initiating new faculty searches that will welcome basic and clinical researchers into our existing pain research community. Please reach out to Doug Wright ([email protected]), Julie Christianson ([email protected]), Erin Young ([email protected]) or Kyle Baumbauer ([email protected]) for additional information about our current faculty searches. Details of the searches are below:
